From observation to innovation: The Modular Heavy-Duty Interior Conveyor that sets a new standard

The world of car wash systems is evolving rapidly – and staying ahead requires more than just improving existing technologies. Car Wash Transmissions (CWT) understands this better than anyone. What began with a specific customer request in Italy has grown into a revolutionary breakthrough: the development of an entirely new, heavy-duty modular interior conveyor concept that combines customization, innovation, and technical precision.

A challenge from Italy as a catalyst for innovation

After years of analyzing traditional interior conveyors, CWT was presented with a unique challenge: replace a 14-year-old, outdated interior conveyor at a car wash in Italy. The question: can it be done better? The answer: absolutely. With a team of engineers, designers, and skilled technicians, CWT developed a completely new system tailored to the client’s specific needs. But it didn’t stop there – the experience served as the launchpad for something much bigger.

From custom solution to modular vision

More and more frequently, clients began asking: “Can you also provide modular heavy-duty interior conveyor systems?” Under the leadership of Patrick Ketelaar (COO, Car Wash Transmissies) and Hans Ketelaar (CFO, K&W Beheer), the CWT team made a bold decision – rather than copy existing concepts, they pursued a radical innovation grounded in real-world practice and advanced engineering. The first step: listening. Not just to customers in Europe, but also in the U.S. What are the bottlenecks? What already works well? And where is the current market falling short of practical needs?

Collaborating with Industry Experts

To perfect the system down to the smallest detail, CWT partnered with top-tier companies like Ammeraal – manufacturer of one of the best modular belts on the market – and Maurice Piket Techniek, who contributed both practical experience and a complete electronic control system.

Technology as the foundation for innovation

The technical development focused on three pillars: dimensional stability, structural integrity, and durability. “A modular conveyor is essentially a looped drive system,” says Patrick Ketelaar. “We could immediately apply our specialized knowledge to that.”

The future of vehicles brings new demands

With the rise of electric vehicles – featuring heavier battery packs and larger dimensions – the average vehicle weight has increased significantly. CWT responded proactively with a modular heavy-duty interior conveyor, engineered for maximum load-bearing capacity. The system is built to handle the toughest real-world conditions, including electric SUVs, fully loaded vans, and pickup trucks. The engineering accounted for the heaviest vehicles currently in use, plus an additional 1.5x safety margin. The result: a robust, stable structure that ensures reliability, even in extreme environments. Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), stress points and loads were precisely mapped. The outcome: a patented stress-absorbing frame that maintains shape under pressure and minimizes wear – a unique innovation within the industry.

Drive system with no compromises

The drive system received maximum attention as well. The main conveyor is powered by a robust motor and chain drive. A split main shaft with a gear coupling ensures perfect parallel motion without tension build-up, while vulcanized return rollers ensure quiet and stable operation.

Afbeelding detail wasstraatBuilt for the future

The frame is constructed from galvanized, extra-heavy steel profiles that resist both internal stress and corrosion. Every detail was reviewed and improved – from profile selection to the return path. No compromises. No coincidences.

An investment that pays off

“An interior conveyor isn’t a cost – it’s a strategic investment.” For entrepreneurs aiming to grow, differentiate, and activate new revenue models, it’s a logical next step. The ROI comes not only from direct income – via premium interior cleaning – but also from increased customer satisfaction, faster processing times, more efficient staffing, and a stronger positioning as a high-end car wash. With an interior conveyor, it’s not just the car that comes out cleaner – the business model becomes smarter too.

Raising the bar higher than ever

CWT’s mission is clear: to create the best interior conveyor on the market. One that unites practical experience, customization, and technical innovation. And according to all involved, they’ve succeeded. “What started as a project in Italy has evolved into a completely new system that is setting a new industry standard,” says Hans Ketelaar. “But the final verdict, as always, lies with the customer.” “Everything works fine here, the belt seems to work well and I'm very happy about that. Yesterday was a non-stop day for the belt with 250 cleanings inside cars and everything worked fine.” (Feedback from the car wash owner)

Exterior Conveyor: The next logical step for CWT

With the introduction of the modular heavy-duty interior conveyor, CWT has made a solid move toward the future of car wash systems. But to remain a market leader, one must look further ahead. The next question is already being asked: “Is now the time to develop our own modular exterior conveyor?” The answer is clear: “The foundation is already in place.” The knowledge gained in drive technology, frame construction, modular systems, and load calculations is directly applicable to the development of a high-end modular exterior conveyor. The ongoing collaborations with technology partners also provide a solid base for continued innovation. Moreover, demand for complete solutions is growing. Entrepreneurs want full-service solutions – a single provider for the entire system, from entry to drying zone. By developing their own modular exterior conveyor, CWT can offer a fully integrated, seamless system: one vision, one system, one point of contact.

Spotless inside… and now outside too

And that next step has already been taken: the first orders for CWT’s newly developed modular heavy-duty conveyor systems are in. The future has begun.

From Observation to Innovation: A Custom-Built Interior Conveyor Belt!
After years of analyzing and observing existing interior conveyor systems in car washes, CWT was presented with a unique challenge:
An Italian car wash asked if we could replace their outdated, 14-year-old interior conveyor belt. Our answer was clear: "Yes, we can!"

That confidence sparked immediate trust – and secured the project. With a dedicated team of experienced engineers, designers, and production staff, we got to work. The result? A completely new and significantly improved system, fully tailored to the client's specific needs. Once again, CWT proves that innovation, craftsmanship, and customization go hand in hand – even across borders.

Innovative Design, Developed Through Close Collaboration.
The new system was not only entirely redesigned, but also produced in-house.
This innovative solution came to life thanks to a close collaboration between CWT, Ammeraal, and Maurice Piket. Their combined expertise, technical know-how, and valuable input led to something exceptional: a durable, efficient, and future-proof interior conveyor system, ready for many years of intensive use.

Together, we make the difference – with smart engineering, strong partnerships, and a passion for perfection.

Car Wash Transmissies (CWT) is growing fast

Car Wash Transmissies

The company is not only expanding with a second building in Lelystad but is also renewing its systems. It all started with the supply of car wash components, and for the past year the company has also been building its own car wash structures – with much success. Now the company is already looking ahead to the next innovation: its own conveyor system for conveyor belts.

Affiliate company K&W Transmissies is located on Poseidonweg in Lelystad. Car Wash Transmissies was also operating from this building, but quickly it outgrew the location and had to move. “Initially, the focus was on car wash components such as chains, sprockets and rollers, and that went very well. From the moment we started making our own structures, we grew so fast that we had to sacrifice part of the warehouse in the current building,” says Patrick Ketelaar, co-owner of Car Wash Transmissies. “In order to meet the demand for structures, we really needed more space.” This space is now available, thanks to a newly constructed building in Lelystad that has already been completed, just down the road at Apolloweg 104. Part of the building is used as a warehouse for chains, rollers, reversing and drive stations, sliding and guide strips, and motor reducers and structures suitable for all brands of car washes. The other half forms the production hall, where the structures are welded in-house. With this new location, the company hopes to be able to continue for several years.

Solutions for every brand
According to Ketelaar, the success of the structures is mainly due to the fact that CWT produces them itself. “We don’t use any intermediaries; all the structures are expertly welded by our own welders. The many years of expertise of our sister company K&W Productie is a major advantage in this respect. This team has been working well together for many years, and together with them we continue to innovate and improve our products.”
Another advantage is that Car Wash Transmissies is not dependent on a brand. Co-owner Diana Hoolwerf explains: “We have three affiliate companies: K&W Productie, K&W Transmissies and Car Wash Transmissies. These companies complement each other and that synergy allows us to tailor everything to our customers. The brand of the car wash does not matter; our solutions always fit.”

Collaboration
Car Wash Transmissies works closely with business partner Maurice Piket to build the structures. “We are always looking for collaborations in the market to create a good product,” says Ketelaar. “Maurice Piket has a lot of knowledge about installations and took us to various car washes to view the steel structures. He was able to show us exactly how it works and what to look out for. That is how we got the ball rolling and started with our first structures.”
In the meantime, the news that Car Wash Transmissies builds and supplies its own structures has spread widely in the European car wash market. “It is going very fast and we are building up a large stock. We are still relatively new to the market, but we notice that there is a great need for a company like Car Wash Transmissies.”
Hoolwerf adds: “Our company has of course been around for a lot longer and we are now very familiar with the car wash world. However, at a certain point Patrick saw a number of points in the existing structures that could be changed to benefit the strength and quality of the systems. Our position within the industry is mainly in the replacement market, and we focus largely on this. Nevertheless, we are also approached for new structure projects. In this, we try to work with Maurice Piket as much as possible, and we certainly do not shy away from these challenges. Many large suppliers build complete car washes, the structures of which eventually have to be replaced. Customers can have these replacements done by their old supplier, or by us. More and more entrepreneurs are coming to us for this service.”

Central Europe
Hoolwerf and Ketelaar are proud of how far they have come since the start of Car Wash Transmissies. “We have managed to attract new customers in 13 different countries – both inside and outside Europe,” says Hoolwerf. “We also expect the Central European region to be an interesting market for CWT. This is a growing market in which we would like to be better known. For this reason, Car Wash Transmissies will participate as an exhibitor at the SHINE networking event that will take place in Krakow at the beginning of October. We do not yet know exactly what it will bring us, but it is important to be there. You have to broaden your horizons and discover the market further.”

Its own conveyor system
Although the company only recently started building structures, it is already looking ahead to the next innovation: its own conveyor system for belts. “The use of belts is growing in the industry, but we do not yet have that in-house,” says Ketelaar. He emphasizes ‘yet’ because Car Wash Transmissies is exploring the possibilities together with belt specialist Ammeraal. “We want to develop our own belt conveyor in collaboration with Ammeraal, so that we can also establish a strong brand on a qualitative level.”

Ketelaar recently visited the United States to take a look at various car washes with a belt conveyor. “There, belts are used much more than they are here in the Netherlands. So together with our head of R&D, I went there to ask car wash owners and ‘operators’ about their experiences. What are the pros and cons, and what could be improved? We deliberately discussed this with the operators of the car wash, who are after all the customers and the people who have to work with the products every day. Our goal with this belt conveyor is to develop a system that is easy to use and requires as little maintenance as possible. And if maintenance does need to be done, it should be relatively easy to do.”
“It is common knowledge that the investment in a belt conveyor is greater than in a chain conveyor, and therefore it is not interesting for every car wash, even if they want it. We see this as a challenge to design a product that is affordable yet still high quality. That is our priority,” says Ketelaar.

‘Benefiting together’
The family is convinced that they will soon be able to offer the best conveyor system. Ketelaar elaborates: “There are many people from the industry helping us to realize this. Ammeraal has the belts, Maurice handles the installations and we ourselves have a great deal of knowledge of construction work. That is also where our added value lies. We have thirty years of experience in the field of chains. We know where we can improve, and I believe that through this collaboration with our partners we can distinguish ourselves from our competitors.”
“We really do it together, and that is great to see,” says Hoolwerf. “It is important that the entire industry benefits from this. You also give each other the opportunity to progress.”

Further pioneering
In the coming months, the focus will be entirely on the belts. Car Wash Transmissies hopes to have its own system ready by the end of the year. “It looks like we can deliver the first units early next year. So, we still have a few months to produce, test and further pioneer,” says Ketelaar.

Raising the chain conveyor

ophogen kettingbaan 1Ever since it opened, about 8 years ago, there have been problems with the cars moving on the chain conveyor. Maurice Piket: “The chain conveyor was too deep in the floor, causing the cars to turn left and the rims to run against the chain on the left side, which regularly resulted in damage to rims. This was very annoying for customers and expensive for an entrepreneur who takes responsibility for this.”
Justin and Jasper, owners of All-In Carwash in Echt, called in the help of the company Car Wash Transmissies, which, together with Maurice Piket Techniek, looked at the issue and discovered the problem. “It turned out that the chain conveyor was located on average 3.5 cm below floor level over its entire length. This was causing the cars to 'move' to the left instead of to the right.

After thorough preparation, Car Wash Transmissies and Maurice Piket Techniek joined forces and solved the problems for the customer. “We removed the entire chain conveyor and raised it. New sections have been welded into the damaged chain conveyor sections. We started this early in the morning and finished it at night. The car wash only stood still for 1 day.”

A first for the gearmotor in the car wash industry - The best of both worlds

motorreductor voor de car washThe drive for the brushes in a car wash requires special gearmotors. This motor gearbox is built from two main parts: the reduction gearbox and the electric motor. Each part is made by a specialized factory and then assembled into the perfect gearmotor that drives the brush.

Car Wash Transmissies has combined the best electric motor for this application with the best reduction gearbox from Transtecno to create the ultimate gearmotor for driving your brushes. It’s a unique combination of the best of both worlds. Through a close collaboration with the Dutch company Transtecno, we have recently developed this Car Wash motor gearbox configuration and it is available (from stock) only at Car Wash Transmissies.

Transtecno is a manufacturer of reduction gearboxes with a worldwide reputation. It’s reduction gears are used by OEM manufacturers of car washes, for good reason. Transtecno has an important European position as a high-quality supplier with its impressive program and product range – especially for car washes.

The gearmotor on a brush drive must be able to withstand constantly changing loads in a very humid environment. You can only achieve this with high-quality materials, for both the reduction gearbox and the electric motor. Car Wash Transmissies has left nothing to chance when it comes to watertightness and moisture resistance. Each gearmotor is assembled by our own employees and carefully tested on a test bench before it leaves the factory.

And the installation? This is very easy because the terminal box is accessible from four sides. Car Wash Transmissies is proud to present this new combination at UNITI 2024 for the first time. Innovating products and systems is clearly a top priority of Car Wash Transmissies.
